| Comments: | Reporting to VS-871 as a pilot fresh out of flight training in 1953, I was amazed at how quickly the more experienced pilots brought the newbies up to speed. In June, the squadron was designated as VS-37, and was my coming of age experience. The squadron quickly achieved an excellent level of readiness, but as the Korean War went to the peace table, deployment was delayed by geopolitical considerations. The core of the squadron was made up of Reservists that had been called up for active duty and served on earlier deployments to Korean waters. With their tour of duty coming to an end in 1954, the most experienced pilots were released back to civilian life just weeks before deployment orders were received. The replacement pilots took a crash course in squadron tactics and carrier operations, but there was no time to qualify them in night carrier operations, the most productive and most challenging tasks facing the squadron. Our carrier, the Essex Class Princeton, CV-37, was without benefit of angled deck or mirror landing system. This placed an enormous burden on the few night qualified pilots. We were required to fly all night missions because of priority training demands and lack of time available to qualify replacement pilots for night operations. |

| Comments: | I was in VS 37 for the final cruise (aboard Kitty Hawk) of the squadron's Stoofs. My crew also went to Ping Tung,
Republic of China to assist them in getting used to the S2E. Good liberty run.
Prior tailhook squadron was VS 21 (early 60s cruise aboard Kearsarge). One VP tour with VP 4 out of Barbers Pt. Shore duty at VS 41. Prior service was in Destroyers as a gunnersmate and missile technician (GMG, GS and MT). Remained in support of DoD after retiring in 1980 until my full retirement in late 2010. Teach at the university now in the evenings to pass the time. |

| Comments: | Hi,
My name is Carl Jewett and I m the Veteran Liaison for the Mesothelioma Center (Asbestos.com); I m also the
Executive Director of the Veterans Assistance Network, and a retired Lieutenant Commander in the US Navy .
While I was browsing through a number of navy ship sites I came across your website and was very impressed
by the information you have listed. I m writing you because I thought you may be interested in including in
linking to our site, or possibly posting some information from your resources page at airasron37.org/links.html Asbestos was commonly used on military vessels and was highly valued for its resistance to heat and fire. These materials were extensively used in engine & boiler rooms and other areas including mess halls, sleeping quarters, and navigation rooms. Products such as cables, gaskets, valves, adhesives and many others also contained asbestos. Any Naval personnel working in the construction, repair, demolition, or renovation of these ships were likely exposed to asbestos. As a result, many veterans are being diagnosed with asbestos disease due to the exposure they encountered during military service. The Mesothelioma Center provides a complete list of occupations, ships, and shipyards that could have put our Veterans at risk for developing asbestos-related diseases. In addition, we have thousands of articles regarding asbestos and mesothelioma and we ve even created a veterans-specific section on our website in order to help inform them about the dangers of asbestos exposure. With more than 3,000 pages of content, our site features information on asbestos, mesothelioma, and other cancers that are caused by asbestos exposure (lung cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, etc.). Unlike other sites, Asbestos.com has achieved HON code approval (Health On the Net (HON) Foundation is a not-for-profit foundation that works to preserve the accuracy and trustworthiness of Web-based medical information). Our site has employed a full staff of writers dedicated to research and writing about asbestos exposure and the diseases that result from exposure to the toxic mineral. In addition, our medical adviser and editor, Dr. Mauricio Salazar,M.D., who has worked in the field of cancer treatment for years, has personally reviewed, edited, and approved all medical information on our site. If you are interested or if you have any other questions, please feel free to e mail me back at carl.jewett(@)asbestos.com. Thanks again. Best Regards, Carl Jewett Mesothelioma Center Asbestos.com |
